The Westraven Witch
This dead-end passage is well-lit by the flames of a tremendous brazier. The smooth walls are devoid of markings. Looking into the brazier, amidst the flickering flames you see that there is an array of tiny steel weapon replicas laid out. Strangely, none are glowing hot, despite the healthy bed of coals on which they rest. Pondering a moment, you realize the flames are not actually casting heat, just light.
There is an inscription around the lip of the brazier, covered in a thin layer of soot. If anyone notices (Perception DC 20) and clears the black away, they can see that it reads:
like a bell that cannot be unrung
for such a one so young was hung
for she was not as one of these
so surprising, this was to me
to find my spear was not the first
to quench this young lady’s thirst
Features of the Area
The Magic Brazier: The brazier, the flames, and the weapon replicas all radiate alteration magic if detected, together forming a puzzle. When the players carefully examine the replicas, present them with the following diagram:
Solving the Puzzle
No clues are provided save the diagram and inscription. The key is to select the correct replica. The correct answer is the unblemished mace, the “virgin” weapon.
Selecting any incorrect replica will prove painful:
- First mistake: a spark spits from the brazier, attacking the person who picked the wrong replica (regardless of whether they picked it up directly or through Mage Hand, a tool, etc). +8 vs Reflex, 2d4 fire damage.
- Second mistake: a flaming burst erupts from the brazier, attacking all creatures in the corridor: +8 vs Reflex, 3d6 fire damage.
- Third mistake: the entire corridor collapses, including the brazier and any characters inside, falling 50 feet to the floor of The Forge below. In addition to the usual falling damage, anyone who was adjacent to the brazier at the time of the collapse takes an additional 3d6 fire damage from the scattered coals.
If the mace is selected:
The bottom of the large brazier suddenly gives way, scattering the coals and replicas into a room below, some 50 feet down.
The group will then be able to secure ropes and climb down safely to The Forge.
